Healthy Inside and Out
Our physical well-being is part of building a strong community. You can find resources on health, fitness, and nutrition on our site. Our clothes are made in the USA and we offer our contractors naturopathic care at a low cost. Our clothing has signature "inside-out" seams, reminding us all that in order to build a better world, we have to open ourselves to each other. We have to share who we are on the inside in order to create the best outside for all.
Economy of Community
Our sliding-scale pricing means that a wide variety of people can afford to wear . We may be the first retail clothing company to attempt this fresh approach to sales.
We donate 1% of all sales to Now Art Grants, a program started by damali ayo that funds artists creating work that engages social change.
Our nest-egg program strives to re-grow industry in the USA by training people in need of skills and work to sew parts of our garments. Teamwork
Our designers, advisors, models, and partners work as a team. We all contribute to the resources on the site and share our expertise on our blog. When you step out on a limb to interrupt racism, help the environment, or create a healthy life for yourself you can feel the support of the team through the soft fibers of our clothing. We are transparent about our operations so that you can trust everything we say and everything we sell. We believe in "co-opetition" - adding the spirit of cooperation to a competitive marketplace. On our Web site you'll find links aplenty including to other designers and products that we love.

Clay
's signature color is 'clay,' a grey that reminds us that whenever two opposite colors (self and other) are mixed, the result is (chromatic) grey. We use this new grey clay to shape our world to be exactly what we want it to be.
Precious Resources
We make our clothes with eco-friendly, sustainable fabrics that are made in harmony with the environment. We use a diversity of fibers, which is key to avoiding the "replace and drain" phenomenon that plagues many "green" practices.
We reuse, recycle, or compost all of our scraps of fabric, pattern paper, thread, and everything that goes into making our garments. Our "scrapology" line reinvents leftover fabric into fresh one-of-a-kind garments. MamaBird shares her eco-living tips with you to help you do your part.
We ship our items in 100% post-consumer packaging in an "upcycling" model. Customers send us their used envelopes, we style them, and send new garments back out to new customers.
We hope you get a long life out of your clothing, but when their time with you has come to an end, you can compost them or send them to be reused through our donation program.
clothing is cold-water washable and will stay soft even when line-dried. Our clothes can be worn in the most casual or the most chic settings. This reduces the amount of clothes you need, freeing up closet space, money, and resources. Our clothing is assembled locally and we offset our CO2 emissions. You can share this cost when you check out. Even the grey color of our Web site saves energy!

founder and designer,
MamaBird damali ayo.
Listen to damali's essay on recycling for NPR's This I Believe.
"I have an MFA in visual arts and a finely tuned eye for all things visual and energetic. I have been sewing and designing clothes since I could thread a needle. I have practiced yoga for ten years, and live an eco-lovely life in which I compost, sheet mulch, save rainwater, and grow food and medicinal herbs. I have been teaching practical steps to end racism at venues across the US for over fifteen years. In 2005, I released a best-selling book on race relations to rave reviews. I have a commitment to health and fitness and finding natural paths to healing. My life demonstrates my belief that all things are connected.
"I have seen that change starts with people, relationships, and courage. This fuels my passion for connecting people with resources and information to help them be all they can be."
damali's name means
"beautiful vision of joy."
